A rock and roll spirit comes to the Ehpad des Aubes in Montpellier!

An unprecedented event delighted the Aubes nursing home in Montpellier this Saturday, May 24, 2025. A rock and roll festival was held in the facility’s gardens, bringing together residents and locals alike. The day was marked by vibrant musical performances, proving that music transcends generations and brings joy and memories to seniors. Here’s how a simple concert brought life and smiles back to all attendees. A unique festival for a dynamic retirement home The Montpellier CCAS (Community and Social Services) offered a major surprise to the residents of the Aubes nursing home by organizing an open-air rock concert. For the first time, three bands took turns performing rock and roll classics in a natural and enchanting setting, symbolizing that retirement doesn’t mean the end of the festivities. This initiative aims to renew the image of retirement homes, proving that they are, above all, places for living and sharing. Residents transported back to their youth

Many residents enthusiastically enjoyed this rock and roll experience. Among them, Marie-Josée, 88, couldn’t hide her enthusiasm as she swayed to the music in her wheelchair. « It reminds me of my youth; I love rock and concerts! » she confided. A few steps away, Galianne, a proud octogenarian and former rock champion, revealed her undiminished passion for dance, reawakening memories of yesteryear despite her Alzheimer’s disease.

A family event that brings people together The concert brought together not only the nursing home residents, but also their families and neighbors. Mireille, 90, came with her granddaughter Dorianne, who didn’t want to miss this unique event. Dorianne admits, « I wanted an activity not far from home, with people her own age. I’m surprised it was rock, but it was fantastic! » It was an intergenerational moment that flowed naturally, with laughter and shared memories. A musical legacy that has resonated for decades

According to Michel Calvo, vice-president of the Montpellier CCAS, this musical epic was motivated by the residents themselves. The residents, in their seventies and eighties, imbued with the musical revolution of the 1950s, wanted to relive the energy of their youth. For Michel Calvo, « The nursing home isn’t an end in itself; it’s life that continues. » These echoing words demonstrate the power of music to break down the barriers of age.

Cultural initiatives that enrich daily life

In addition to this unique event, the Aubes nursing home is also hosting « Tableaux Vivants, » an art exhibition running until August 9, which features residents dressed as characters from famous works of art. These efforts aim to offer seniors activities that nourish the spirit, demonstrating that culture is an inexhaustible source of happiness and social connection.

A promising future for activities in nursing homes

Despite the financial strain faced by nursing homes in the region, events such as this rock concert prove that creativity and commitment can overcome obstacles. Music resonates not only in the hearts of residents, but also in those of their loved ones, taking each one on a reminiscent and joyful adventure.
