Montpellier: Urban rodeos, an effective fight against scrapped vehicles

Montpellier has taken firm measures to counter the phenomenon of urban rodeos. By symbolically destroying vehicles used in these dangerous practices, the municipality and the justice system want to send a strong message: there is no impunity for those who endanger the lives of others. Thanks to collaboration between the city hall, the prosecutor’s office, and law enforcement, operations to seize and destroy vehicles have been implemented, underscoring a shared desire to act resolutely against this worrying offense.

A Disturbing Phenomenon: Urban Rodeos

Urban rodeos continue to challenge public order, creating a wave of concern among residents of several municipalities, including Montpellier. These practices, which involve performing risky and illegal stunts in motorized vehicles in urban areas, pose a real danger to pedestrians and other road users. Recent incidents, such as the assault of an elected official in Gironde or the injury of a volunteer firefighter in Évian, illustrate the seriousness of this phenomenon. Montpellier’s Offensive Response Faced with this growing threat, the Mayor of Montpellier, Michael Delafosse, and the Public Prosecutor, Fabrice Belargent, have decided to take decisive action. They have destroyed vehicles used in urban rodeos. This symbolic act is intended to send a message that such behavior will not be tolerated and that public safety is a top priority.

Vehicle Seizures and Destruction

Since last year, 21 vehicles have been seized following urban rodeos. An agreement between the City of Montpellier and the Prosecutor’s Office has enabled a process of seizure, confiscation, and destruction of the vehicles involved. Electric scooters, motorcycles, quadsand other scooters are affected, which helps keep these misused vehicles off the streets. An Effective Partnership to Secure the CityThe cooperation policy between the municipal police, the national police, and the prosecutor’s office has proven crucial to the implementation of this strategy. Thanks to this effective partnership, Montpellier has been able to organize regular enforcement operations. These operations not only help identify offenders, but also ensure a swift and visible judicial response.

The Key Role of Video Surveillance

Video surveillance cameras play a vital role in the fight against urban rodeos. They provide the ability to observe and document violations as they occur, thus enabling the collection of evidence to support legal action. These technological tools are at the heart of the system implemented to curb the rodeo phenomenon with increasing effectiveness. A Clear and Strong Message to Offenders Michaël Delafosse and

Fabrice Belargent

are unanimous: it is time to make those responsible for urban rodeos understand that they will be held accountable for their actions. The confiscation and subsequent destruction of vehicles sends a message of firmness and deterrence, emphasizing that these offenses still carry serious consequences. Justice will relentlessly pursue those who, through their irresponsible actions, poison the lives of residents.
