A Visionary Project for Montpellier

In Montpellier, the transformation of tunnels existing in real oasis for pedestrians and cyclists is underway, with an ambitious project at its head cycle gallery. This initiative aims to offer a secure and convenient alternative for cyclists and to protect the pedestrians in the heart of the city.

Facilities Designed for All

There cycle gallery at the Comédie tunnel will allow users to cross Montpellier in complete safety. Separated from the vehicle lanes by a wall, this gallery, 384 meters long and at least 3 meters wide, improves not only the safety of cyclists, but also that of pedestrians, by reducing potential conflicts in pedestrian areas.

A Challenge Completed with Brilliance

Before starting the work, several major challenges had to be overcome. The administrative and regulatory constraints linked to security were overcome thanks to the hard work of local teams. Michaël Delafosse, president of the Montpellier Metropolis, welcomed the approval of the Ministry of Transport and the support of the National Commission for the Evaluation of the Safety of Road Works (CNESOR).

An example to follow

The first project of its type in France, this cycle gallery represents an inspiration for other communities across the country. With a total budget of 7.35 million euros, of which more than one million is devoted to security and maintenance, this initiative shows the importance of providing funds for infrastructure maintenance.

Safety and Comfort for Cyclists and Pedestrians

In addition to the gallery, secure facilities for cyclists are planned at the ends of the tunnel. This work aims to complete the cycle ring and connect the bicycle lines, thus facilitating gentle mobility. Pedestrian protection is also being strengthened, with expanded pedestrian zones and strict rules for cyclists.

Facilitate Access and Parking

The project includes the creation of dedicated entrances for cyclists in the Comédie car park, providing 300 secure parking spaces. A “mobility hub” will also be created by 2025, with facilities for shared cars, motorcycles and scooters.

A Sustainable Future for Montpellier

Michaël Delafosse and his team aim to make Montpellier a model of sustainable urban mobility. By making travel safer for cyclists and protecting pedestrians, this ambitious project demonstrates their commitment to a green transformation of the city.
Check out this incredible cycle gallery and imagine a future where Montpellier turns away from cars to fully embrace soft mobility, thus creating safer and more pleasant spaces for all its inhabitants.
