De la fermeture estivale de la médiathèque Jean-Jacques Rousseau à Montpellier : les secrets d'une pause estivale bien méritée ! 📚☀️

In the heart of Montpellier, the Jean-Jacques Rousseau media library is enjoying an intriguing summer closure. But what is hidden behind this summer curtain? Let’s dive behind the scenes to understand why the media library chose to « get some fresh air ».

The summer closure of the Jean-Jacques Rousseau media library raised many questions among local residents Mosson Montpellier. Behind this decision lie major issues linked to security and the modernization of infrastructure.

Essential consolidation work

Since November 28, 2023, the media library has been closed to the public for major consolidation works. These mainly concern the strengthening of foundations and the takeover of the entire building. The objective is to secure the premises for staff and visitors, while improving the service offering.

This work, of capital importance, will make it possible to meet stricter safety standards and guarantee the sustainability of this crucial cultural facility for the local community.

Extension of subscriptions and continuity of service

To compensate for the closure, current subscriptions and loans of users have been extended until the reopening planned for September 2025. In the meantime, users can continue to borrow and return documents in the network’s thirteen other media libraries.

This measure offers a temporary solution and ensures continuity of service for the 3,940 active subscribers of the Rousseau media library, 68% of whom are young people under 18 years old.

A program of off-site activities: ‘Rousseau takes the air’

To fill the void left by the closure, the program ‘Rousseau takes the air’ was established and reinforced during the summer. This program aims to maintain access to culture for residents of the Mosson district through various outdoor activities.

Events in the heart of the Mosson district

The media library team offers activities in emblematic places of the district such as the square of the Gisèle Halimi space, the Sophie Desmaret park, and the Garrigues lake. These events are also organized in partnership with local associations and institutions such as schools, Maisons pour Tous and social centers.

Varied activities for all ages

Every Wednesday and Thursday morning until August 8, activities such as readings, games and scientific and artistic practice workshops are offered in the courtyard of the André Boulloche elementary school. In addition, on August 2, a major media library party and a show for young audiences will be held in Sophie Desmaret Park.

  • Readings
  • Games
  • Scientific and artistic workshops
  • Media library party
  • Young audience show

An open-air media library accessible to all

The complete program ‘Rousseau takes the air’ is available on the website of the Media Library Network. Every Tuesday morning, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., media library agents are also present in the Halles des 4 Saisons at La Paillade to discuss the proposed actions with the public.

The summer closure of the Jean-Jacques Rousseau media library, although uncomfortable in the short term, is a necessary step to guarantee safety and improvement of services. While waiting for its reopening, the program ‘Rousseau takes the air’ continues to bring culture to life within the Mosson district.
