Montpellier becomes the first city in Occitanie to obtain the “Committed Organic Territory” label

On July 8, Montpellier became the third French city to be certified as a “Committed Organic Territory,” joining Bordeaux and Nantes. This recognition, awarded by the Interbio Occitanie association, reflects the city’s unwavering commitment to a sustainable agricultural policy aimed at promoting organic farming and improving the quality of food for its citizens. With 33.3% of its Usable Agricultural Area (UAA) cultivated organically and a steadily increasing proportion of organic products in school cafeterias, Montpellier is leading the way in promoting healthier and more environmentally friendly food. A strong commitment to organic farming The “Committed Organic Territory” label reflects a coherent and determined strategy implemented by the City and Metropolitan Area of Montpellier. This ambitious approach is based on a set of measures focused on protecting agricultural land, encouraging the establishment of new organic farmers, and the agroecological transition to preserve precious water resources. Thus, the city demonstrates its commitment to providing healthy and sustainable food to every resident, regardless of their budget.

Significant progress in school cafeterias

Montpellier has seen the share of organic products in its school cafeterias increase substantially. Increasing from 20% in 2021 to 37% today, this progress demonstrates the authorities’ desire to promote healthier eating from an early age. Officials now aim to achieve 100% organic products on students’ plates, demonstrating their determination to commit to a future that is more respectful of health and the environment. A model for other communities The “committed organic territory” label also reflects Montpellier’s desire to serve as a model for other communities across France and Occitanie. The goal is not only to maintain current standards, but also to go beyond them, inspiring a multitude of other cities and metropolises to follow the same path toward sustainability. The recognition by Interbio Occitanie thus underscores the city’s tireless efforts to meet and exceed the criteria defined as part of the Organic Ambition Plan.
