As part of the ambitious project to extend tram line 5, Place de Chine in Montpellier has undergone a complete redevelopment, transforming it into a modern and peaceful space. With a budget of 13 million euros, the work was completed in October 2025 with an inauguration with great fanfare. The site, until now mainly used by motorists, has been completely redesigned to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, and also includes the renovation of social housing and public facilities.

A project integrated into the development of tram line 5

The arrival of the tram line 5 in Montpellier marks a turning point in the city’s urban infrastructure. The redevelopment of Place de Chine is part of this improvement effort, aiming to integrate the different means of transport in a harmonious and accessible framework. This space, formerly dedicated mainly to automobile traffic, has seen the removal of parking spaces. The sidewalks have been widened and new pedestrian crossings created to offer residents a pleasant and secure place.

A peaceful place dedicated to gentle mobility

The metamorphosis of China Square encourages increased use of soft mobility. Cyclists and pedestrians now benefit from new secure routes for their daily trips. This fits perfectly with the efforts of Montpellier to improve its performance in terms of urban travel and citizen comfort. The square has become a model of sustainable development, promoting a reduction in CO2 emissions.

Citizen participation and revegetation

The redevelopment of Place de Chine was also carried out with the active participation of local residents. Planting sessions were organized with local children to introduce more vegetation into this space, thus contributing to the creation of a green and welcoming environment. These community-driven efforts strengthen residents’ sense of belonging and raise awareness of environmental issues from an early age. Improving the surrounding infrastructureBeyond simple redevelopment, the project includes the renovation of 230 social housing units and the modernization of nearby public facilities. These efforts, by improving the quality of life for residents, contribute to the growing dynamism of Montpellier South. This initiative is also part of the municipality’s broader vision to make Montpellier an attractive and innovative city.

A substantial financial investment

The transformation of Place de Chine required a budget of €13 million, demonstrating Montpellier’s commitment to investing in its future. This funding not only enabled the redevelopment of the square, but also promoted the seamless integration of new transportation infrastructure with a view to sustainable urban development. Such an investment demonstrates the city’s commitment to meeting the growing mobility needs of its residents while improving their quality of life.
