Festivities interrupted by an act of violence
What should have been the happiest day of their lives, a union celebrating love and commitment to Montpellier, turned into a night of terror. During a gypsy wedding which was held at the CitĂ© GĂ©ly, Place Ătienne Jodelle, the evening was dramatically interrupted by a unexpected shooting.
An unpredictable attack
Around 8:30 p.m., while the festivities were going well, a 19 year old young woman, one of the guests, was suddenly attacked by her ex-partner. This individual, not being welcome at the celebration, violently attacked her by striking her several times. The gypsy community present tried to intervene to protect her, but the situation quickly degenerated.
A rapid escalation of violence
The already palpable tension was amplified when the attacker was joined by another person. This second individual released a firearm and fired several times into the crowd, causing chaos and panic. The shots caused significant injuries to three participants: a 37-year-old man, the 19-year-old woman and another 41-year-old woman.
The escape of the attackers and the intervention of the emergency services
While the injured were treated and quickly transported to Lapeyronie hospital for urgent care, the shooters took advantage of the confusion to flee, thus avoiding an immediate confrontation with the police. This scene of violence deeply shocked the local community.
Unwavering support from the community
Following this tragedy, the solidarity of the gypsy community was not long in coming. Around 200 people gathered in front of the hospital to show their support and get news from the victims, showing their unity in the face of this ordeal.
