The long-awaited line 5 of the Montpellier tramway is making rapid progress towards its entry into service, scheduled for February 2025. Large-scale infrastructure work is currently taking place, with the installation of the rails and the first traffic tests scheduled. These key milestones mark significant progress, while “peaceful neighborhoods” initiatives ensure that the community remains at the heart of urban transformations.

Update on Line 5: status of work

Since it began at the beginning of June 2024, work on tram line 5, particularly in the Ovalie sector in Montpellier, has progressed at reduced but determined speed. The northern section, which extends from the Maurice-Gennevaux roundabout to the Place du 8-Mai-1945, is a focal point of this development. On November 20, 2024, a photo report revealed the impressive progress of this construction work. The borders are taking shape, the roads are starting to take shape, and the infrastructure is coming to life between the municipalities of Saint-Jean-de-Védas and Montpellier.

Installation of rails: a decisive step

The installation of the grooved rails is a decisive step in the progress of the project. Between mid-June 2024 and today, these rails have been anchored in the Montpellier soil, although progress has sometimes been discontinuous. These rails, essential for the arrival of the trains, guarantee eco-responsible transport capacity for more than 2,700 travelers during peak hours, a major asset for a booming city.

Traffic tests: a taste of the future service

The traffic tests, planned to begin the final phase of this major project, promise to transform the vision into reality. With tests scheduled between February and July 2025, the northern section of line 5 will be the scene of these crucial operations. This trial period will make it possible to refine the operation of the infrastructure and ensure the security and efficiency of the service before its official commissioning.

Peaceful neighborhoods and community mobilization

As part of this transformation, the “peaceful neighborhoods” project was implemented in collaboration with residents. This innovative traffic plan ensures harmonious coexistence between urban development and the daily well-being of residents. Furthermore, facilities for pedestrians, creating safe routes to the city center, illustrate Montpellier’s commitment to adapting to contemporary needs while preserving the essence of its community.
