In Montpellier, tractors and farmers unite to make their demands heard in the heart of the city

This Friday morning, the streets of Montpellier were filled with tractors and farmers determined to make their demands heard in the face of the imminent vote on the free trade agreement with Mercosur. United under the banner of the Young Farmers and the FDSEA (National Federation of Farmers’ Unions), these mobilizations aim to maintain pressure while the decisions are being made in Brussels. Demonstrations, ranging from the dumping of agricultural waste to slow-moving convoys, illustrate their resolve.

Tractors invade downtown Montpellier

This Friday, at dawn, an unusual scene unfolded in front of the Arc de Triomphe in Montpellier. Tractors loaded with bales of straw and wood were taking their places, ready to head to the prefecture for a large-scale demonstration. The choice of this strategic location was not insignificant; a symbol of unity, it was the starting point of their march towards the prefecture. The procession made its presence felt not only symbolically but also visually, with pallets, tires, and agricultural waste artfully arranged to block the street between Place du Peyrou and the monument. These actions demonstrate the farmers’ resolve to make their voices heard.

Fighting the Mercosur Free Trade Agreement

The main motivation for the protesters is the controversial Mercosur Free Trade Agreement. According to them, this decision, although supported by European institutions, threatens French agriculture. Despite France’s opposition, the farmers remain determined to publicly voice their disagreement on the spot, hoping to influence the vote scheduled for that same day in Brussels.

The Montpellier contingent intends to exert pressure right up to the prefecture, hoping to raise awareness among leaders. The farmers want their message of resistance and protection of local agriculture to be heard not only in Montpellier, but also across Europe.

The farmers’ dramatic actions in the Hérault region

Beyond the demonstration on Friday morning, recent weeks have seen numerous actions carried out by the Young Farmers and the FDSEA (National Federation of Farmers’ Unions). Some, like covering speed cameras with Christmas trees and garbage bags, have attracted attention. Others, more targeted, such as dumping manure in front of the offices of local members of parliament, highlight a palpable discontent.

On Monday, a slow-moving protest on the A709 motorway caused major disruptions. Starting from the Vendargues roundabout, the demonstrators dumped manure as far as the Odysseum roundabout, blocking traffic. A brutal blow to the traffic, intended to literally symbolize the weight of their demands.
