Last weekend in Montpellier, a shocking event took place in a snack bar specializing in the sale of kebabs. A customer was violently attacked by three employees for simply giving a look deemed disapproving. The incident took place while the customer was peacefully waiting for his order. This case raises many questions about the rise in urban violence and the apparent impunity for aggressive acts in public places.

Aggression: Unexpected Violence

On the night of Saturday 2 to Sunday 3 November 2024, a 28-year-old from Montpellier went to a kebab shop on rue Maguelone, near the Place de la Comédie and the Saint-Roch SNCF station. Sitting at a table, he noted that the waitress seemed to stare at him persistently. Intrigued by this attitude, he politely asked her if something was wrong.

The reaction was surprising and rapid. An employee, introducing himself as the waitress’s brother, came out from behind the snack bar and accused the customer of looking at his sister askance. He then asked the customer to “kindly” come out to discuss the incident. Nothing suggested that, outside, there were three men waiting to attack him. What followed was a violent attack: the client was thrown to the ground and severely beaten, particularly on the head.

The Intervention of the Authorities and the Filing of a Complaint

Shortly after the attack, witnesses alerted the police and emergency services. Firefighters and a national police patrol arrived quickly on the scene, allowing the victim to be transported to the emergency room of Lapeyronie hospital. Conscious but seriously injured, the client, surprised and shocked by this gratuitous attack, decided to file complaint at the Montpellier police headquarters so that an investigation can be launched.

Unresolved Questions and Public Reaction

This attack raises several questions: why did a simple altercation due to a “disapproving look” degenerate into such violence? Does this reflect a growing trend of violence in daily social interactions in Montpellier? Should we fear for our safety in public places, even for the slightest misunderstanding?

This Case is Not Isolated

Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated case. Montpellier. One could recall similar events that occurred in the same city, such as the recently reported incident where a customer was bitten on the ear in a restaurant on Place Saint-Denis (learn more), or the repeated attacks on the city’s trams (details here).

A Call for Collective Responsibility

Such actions must alert and challenge local authorities and all citizens. It is imperative to address these misdeeds rigorously and seriously in order to eradicate this culture of impunity which seems to be becoming widespread. What society do we want for the future of Montpellier, a city where everyone should feel safe?

Let us remain vigilant and committed to jointly confronting all forms of violence, whether underlying or overt. Victims must not hesitate to report these unacceptable acts, just as this Montpellier man courageously did, so that justice can be done.
