In Montpellier, a cell phone theft occurred unexpectedly before the eyes of the police. Curiously, the victim, after recovering his phone, refused to file a complaint against the thief. The thief, already implicated in another case, was released due to the failure to file a complaint and a lack of additional evidence.
An Unexpected Patrol on Cours Gambetta
On Monday, July 7, around 5 p.m., a team from the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC) was conducting a routine patrol on Cours Gambetta in Montpellier. Their attention was drawn to an individual who appeared to be trying to conduct business with passersby.
After speaking with one of them, the scene shifted to an ATM where the situation took an unexpected turn when the individual discreetly stole the passerby’s cell phone.
Police Observation and Intervention
Having observed the scene with their own eyes, the police quickly approached the victim once the theft was discovered. Upon learning of the incident, the officers arrested the suspect, who was still in possession of the stolen phone.
Despite being offered the opportunity to file a complaint, the victim recovered his belongings without expressing any intention of filing a complaint. This decision surprised the officers on the scene.
A thief already implicated in another case
During the arrest, the police discovered that the suspect was also the subject of a complaint for domestic violence. Citing a single incident between the man and his wife, a difference of opinion appeared to be the cause of the mixed legal action. Given this context, and in the absence of new evidence or complaints filed against the suspect for the phone theft, law enforcement released the man. Originally from Lunel and of Algerian nationality, the suspect was able to leave the scene without any further immediate charges being brought against him.Disturbing Perspectives in the Montpellier Landscape
