Montpellier in mourning: several shots fired during New Year’s celebrations

During New Year’s celebrations in Montpellier, dramatic incidents disrupted the festivities. Several shots were fired in different parts of the city, prompting a massive police response. Several young people were identified, and a minor was arrested. The tense atmosphere escalated further with other violent incidents, casting a shadow over the annual celebrations.

Police Intervention During the Festivities

As Montpellier prepared to welcome the New Year with enthusiasm, the night of December 31, 2025, took an unexpected and disturbing turn. Indeed, several shots were reported

in the city, leading to multiple police interventions. Around 10:30 p.m., witnesses reported shots fired on Avenue des Prés d’Arènes, near the Saint-Martin tram stop. The perpetrators, a group of young people dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, fled before being found and apprehended by law enforcement. During the operation, a 6.65 mm shell casing was found at the scene, and a runaway minor was arrested.

Another incident in the east of the city

A few hours later, another shooting occurred on Rue des Recatous, in eastern Montpellier. This time, a man wearing a balaclava and a black coat with a fur collar was the shooter. Although the victim escaped the attack, four 12-gauge shotgun shells (No. 9 shot) were found at the scene. A 16-year-old boy was arrested for starting a fire in Montpellier, raising concerns about youth behavior. Similarly, a violent altercation resulted in a 60-year-old man being stabbed seven times, leaving him in critical condition, while a 21-year-old suspect was taken into custody. Demonstrations and Social Tensions In addition to these incidents, social anger is also palpable in Montpellier, where a demonstration drew between 10,000 and 20,000 people protesting against local conditions. The protests are intensifying in a region already marked by a tense atmosphere, highlighting the urgent need to restore calm and security.
