On Saturday, October 18, at Place de la Comédie in Montpellier, a disconcerting incident took place on the public transportation network. A young woman was arrested by the national police after stealing the bank card of a passenger she had previously followed from Saint-Roch station. This theft, aided by an ingenious but malicious set-up, was fortunately foiled thanks to the vigilance of passengers and transit staff.

The Subterfuge at the Departure from Saint-Roch Station

As soon as she left Saint-Roch station, a passenger was the target of a well-orchestrated scam. A young woman standing nearby approached her and informed her that the contactless payment system was not working. To convince her target, she pointed to a sticker affixed to the ticket machine, reading “No change” and “Contactless out of order.” The victim, taken by surprise, proceeds to pay by entering her PIN, allowing the scammer to observe her closely. Distraction and Stealth in Complete Discretion Once aboard the tram, the criminal doesn’t just observe; she goes on the offensive. She engages in conversation with the victim, distracting her from her surroundings. Using this ruse, an accomplice takes advantage of the passenger’s inattention to steal her wallet containing her bank card. Rapid Intervention and Arrest However, the situation quickly changes when the tram arrives at the Comédie station. Realizing the theft, the unfortunate passenger alerts other passengers and TaM staff. The response is immediate, and thanks to everyone’s cooperation, one of the perpetrators is apprehended by the police before she can flee, in possession of the stolen items. Fortunately, no cash withdrawals were made, and the victim’s personal belongings were returned.

Legal Consequences for the Perpetrator

Took into police custody, the 18-year-old suspect admitted her participation in this scam and revealed that she operated in different cities. Of Bosnian origin, she was brought before the court for an immediate appearance. This incident highlights the need to be more vigilant regarding the scam methods employed on the Montpellier transport network.

Call for Vigilance

The National Police stresses the importance of increased vigilance regarding this type of behavior. Passengers are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior. Saturday’s incident demonstrates that solidarity and collective attention can effectively deter malicious acts on our public transport.
