In Montpellier, a key milestone has just been reached in the ambitious project to build a new mosque in the Mosson district. Two preliminary sales agreements have been signed between the Montpellier metropolitan area and the association that manages the existing mosque. This project aims for a modern place of worship to be built by 2028. The new building is planned to replace the current infrastructure and will accommodate more worshippers while offering a larger and more suitable space.

A promising project for the community

The Montpellier metropolitan area, in collaboration with the association in charge of the mosque in the Mosson district, has taken a significant step towards realizing a major project. Two preliminary sales agreements have been signed, thus paving the way for the realization of this ambitious project. Located on the site of the former Catalogne tower on Avenue de Barcelone, the new place of worship will cover 1,000 square meters and will be able to accommodate nearly 800 worshippers, compared to the current 486. The site, abandoned since the tower’s demolition over 15 years ago, is about to be given a new lease on life.

A commitment to freedom of conscience

During the announcement of the signings, Michaël Delafosse, president of the Montpellier metropolitan area, emphasized the importance of this project for the community. According to him, it is a beautiful illustration of what France represents, where everyone enjoys freedom of conscience. While reaffirming his commitment to secularism, he also stressed the importance of respecting individual faith. Worshippers must have access to suitable places of worship that allow them to live their spirituality fully and peacefully.

A project on the horizon

The construction of the new place of worship is being overseen by the Hérault-based firm Tec Archi, which is responsible for the plans. The inauguration is scheduled for 2028, coinciding with the demolition of the current mosque and the Font del Rey building that houses it. SA3M, the public company responsible for urban development in the region, will manage this urban planning project. Stakes and Benefits for the Montpellier Community
