In the streets of Montpellier, a crucial debate is raging: the location of the third fire station. Beyond simple geographical considerations, this strategic choice could well have a major impact on the security and well-being of the region’s inhabitants. Let’s dive into the heart of this crucial question to understand how it brings fundamental changes.

A pressing need finally met

The establishment of the third fire station of Sdis 34 has Montpellier finally echoes a request that has been awaited for years. Monday July 8, 2024, under the mandate of Michaël Delafosse, mayor of Montpellier, the laying of the first stone formalized the start of the work. Located in the area of Restanque, between the Prés d’Arènes and the Tournezy Market-Station, the barracks aims to respond to the increase and growing needs of the population.

A strategic location

The positioning of this new barracks, rue du Mas Saint-Pierre, soon to be renamed Montpellier South district, is anything but a coincidence. Thanks to this location, firefighters will be able to intervene quickly on the A709 and A9 motorways, and respond effectively to emergencies in the heart of the city. In addition, the municipality of Saint-Jean-de-Védas, currently served by the Mosson-La Paillade barracks, will also benefit from this strategic proximity.

Decongestion and distribution of relief

The new barracks will also make it possible to unload the other emergency centers. The main center of Montaubérou-Millénaire, for example, will see its southern sectors lightened, thus optimizing its efficiency. The municipalities of Slats and of Perols will continue to depend on the Palavas-les-Flots intervention and rescue center, ensuring a balanced distribution of rescue forces around the town.

Modern and ecological equipment

This project includes the acquisition of the first electric ton pump van dedicated to urban fires in Hérault, at a cost of €850,000, as well as one or two ambulances. These investments reflect a commitment to environmentally friendly modernization. The site, planned for a delivery early 2026, will be able to begin thanks to funding from the Departmental Council and the City of Montpellier, to the tune of €14 million.

A reinforced territorial network

The prefect of Hérault, François-Xavier Lauch, underlined the importance of this new barracks to respond to a growing population of 10,000 inhabitants per year. This initiative is part of a strategy for distributing emergency units according to communication routes, and an advanced project already envisages the construction of a fourth barracks north of Montpellier, towards Montferrier-sur-Lez.

Firm and lasting local commitment

The mayor of Montpellier recalled that this new barracks is located on land made available via a long lease of 99 years. Located in a neighborhood where a school and 8,000 housing units are also planned, this barracks constitute a crucial addition to local infrastructure. The President of the Department, Kléber Mesquida, welcomed this effort with a multi-year investment plan of €16 million in 2024, covering, among other things, the purchase of two large ladders and fourteen ambulances.

A response to summer challenges

With more than 1,500 interventions recorded during the first week of July alone, Hérault firefighters are constantly mobilized, particularly against Forest fires and the drownings. Strengthening their intervention capacity with this new barracks is a necessary response to current and future challenges, thus spreading the slogan of the Sdis 34 : “Always Present”.
