Since fall 2022, Montpellier has been undergoing a complete transformation. The redevelopment work on the Charles de Gaulle esplanade is continuing intensively, in order to revitalize this emblematic space. With the addition of new infrastructure such as kiosks and fountains, and the extension of green spaces, this project promises to make the esplanade a true arts park. Here is an overview of the main milestones and planned improvements.
Major renovation stage initiated
The new phase of work on the Charles de Gaulle esplanade started this Monday, September 9. This crucial step constitutes a turning point in the progress of the project, with a concentration of operations on the lateral axes of the alley. The redevelopment includes the construction of fountains and the widening of green spaces, aiming to provide a more pleasant environment for residents and visitors.
Revitalization of public space
The overall project to rehabilitate Allée Paul Boulet is an integral part of this transformation. This work aims to prepare the area for the reception of future kiosks and to revitalize the public space. From September 16, the terraces and old kiosks were dismantled to make way for modern and functional facilities.
Waiting for the “water door”
Among the major innovations, the introduction of a real “water gate” is one of the most anticipated promises of the project. Work will begin on January 3, 2024, transforming the esplanade and Place de la Comédie into much more interactive and attractive spaces. This is part of a desire to make Montpellier even more welcoming and lively.
A modern arts park
The extension of green spaces and the modernization of equipment make this project an ambitious undertaking. Ultimately, the esplanade will transform into a true arts park, offering relaxation areas, art installations and spaces for various cultural events. All of this contributes to restoring all its splendor to the heart of the metropolis.
The new fountains: an immediate success
Among the new assets of the esplanade, the recently installed fountains are already enjoying great success. With 133 water jets spread over 1,000 m², they multiply the presence of water in this area by five, bringing a refreshing and aesthetic touch that appeals to young and old.
Timeline and future outlook
The redevelopment work on the esplanade and Place de la Comédie will last until 2025. This year will mark the planned end of the last major operations, aimed at a total renovation of the green spaces and a complete modernization of the infrastructure. By summer 2025, Montpellier residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a completely renovated and beautified esplanade.
