The Montpellier tramway has finally reached the Sud de France station, a long-awaited achievement for the residents of Montpellier. This milestone event was the occasion for a grand ceremony during which Mayor Michaël Delafosse and many residents celebrated this historic milestone. This article invites you to rediscover this unforgettable day through captivating videos of the first trip and the official inauguration of the Line 1 extension.

A highly anticipated event

After seven long years of waiting since the opening of the Sud de France station in 2018, the Montpellier tramway finally connects this station directly to Odysseum. Now, passengers can complete this journey in just 20 minutes, making their travel considerably easier. Thanks to this extension, there is no longer any need for shuttles or line changes, a significant improvement in the daily lives of Montpellier residents. The Official Inauguration

This Saturday at noon, Michaël Delafosse, Mayor of Montpellier, officially inaugurated this long-awaited extension. Hundreds of people, around 500, gathered on the forecourt of the Gare Sud de France to witness the first tram service. This 1.3-kilometer extension cost €50 million, an investment shared between the Montpellier metropolitan area, the Occitanie region, and the French government.

A Multimodal Transportation Offer

The metropolitan area’s Vice President in charge of mobility, Julie Frêche, emphasized the importance of this new extension, which will not be a standalone project. Soon, the Gare Sud de France will also benefit from an extension of bus route 15, new bike lanes, and even a second taxi rank, thus constituting a comprehensive multimodal transportation offering.

Reactions from the first passengers

The first people to take the tramway expressed their relief and excitement about this new development. Some said they will now be able to take the train from the Sud de France station more often, rather than going to the Saint-Roch station. A real step forward for the 3,800 passengers expected daily.
