A closely monitored speed camera: drivers’ reaction pushes the government to react near Montpellier
The speed camera installed on the RN109 in Juvignac, near Montpellier, sparked a wave of protests this summer. Accused of being a “trap” by many drivers, it led to significant adjustments by the authorities. A speed camera under fire
At the entrance to Montpellieron the RN109, the speed camera located in the Clermont-l’Hérault – Montpellier direction sparked an outcry from drivers. On average, this camera flashed nearly 1,000 times per day, which prompted an avalanche of criticism on social media. According to many drivers, the layout of the speed limit signs made driving extremely complex and created situations that were considered a “money pump.”
Among the testimonies, that of Denis, 81, is particularly telling. After being flashed twice, he expressed his anger by denouncing this location as being intended solely to “make money and fill the coffers.” Dozens of other testimonies also raised concerns about the risk of a series of accidents due to the sudden braking required by the positioning of the radar.
A salutary change
Aware of the growing discontent, the administration was quick to make changes. As of August 25, a new 90 km/h speed limit sign was installed approximately 150 meters upstream of the controversial speed camera, giving drivers more time to react. The sign located just before the camera was transformed into a “90 reminder,” alleviating the trap-like feeling that plagued users.
These signage adjustments were well received by motorists, demonstrating that their concerns have been heard. The adjustments are not only intended to reduce the risk of sudden braking, but also to ensure greater safety for all users of the route.
A safety issue on a sensitive route
Despite recent improvements, the RN109 remains considered a highly sensitive route. Used daily by many motorists, this road is considered very busy and requires the utmost vigilance. The speed limit changes, the curves present throughout this section, and the heavy traffic amplify the danger. While the radar’s presence is justified by concerns for road safety, its initial placement serves as a reminder of the importance of foresight on the roads. An effective radar must primarily serve the purpose of prevention, not just enforcement. This time, the government’s responsiveness has successfully addressed drivers’ concerns, contributing to a safer road environment.
